Modernizing RuneScape combat

A new update for RuneScape was released today, continuing Jagex’s plan to modernize the free-to-play MMORPG. Today’s update focuses on modernizing the game’s combat, making it “more intuitive and easier to learn” and creating a “simpler but deeper harmony between skills.”

The Combat Modernization update is one of a series of updates that Jagex plans to implement throughout RuneScape’s 25th anniversary year. It is the result of ongoing betas over the past three months, changing player skill performance, correcting timing, and implementing changes in other areas. The update follows previous Road to Restoration updates, including an improved UI and rebalancing of the early gameplay experience.

This will not be the last update in this project. Jagex has already announced an update for later this month that will remove many of the daily activities that players find “a chore.” Later in the year, players can also expect an update that introduces changes to the surface world designed to bring “unity to the game environment,” as well as a visual overhaul of player characters. And sometime this spring, RuneMetrics will be made available to everyone for free.
