Today Wildlight Entertainment announced that Highguard, the free-to-play shooter that released in late January, is being canceled. This likely won’t come as a surprise to those who have been paying attention to the game, considering the game’s general reception and the fact that layoffs of all but a “core group of developers” were announced about two weeks after release. But it’s still sad, both for the developers and for the players who enjoyed the game.
The closure was announced this afternoon via the Official Twitter account of the gamet, where they named the final deployment date as March 12th. The post goes on to say that “despite the passion and hard work” of the team, they have not been able to retain enough players to “support the sport long-term.”
The post does mention that 2 million players have tried the game, but this has happened over the last month and a half. As for active players, Steam DB puts the all-time high at just over 97,000. Since then, the number of consecutive players has fallen to under 500 and in some cases to less than 150. Even in a free-to-play game, players will have to spend money to survive, and this spending will be less than the total number of players. This way you can see where the problem is.
Before the game drops, the development team decided to release one final batch of content so players can share what they’ve been working on. This includes a new guardian, new weapon, skill trees and more. Patch notes will be available at a later date.
