Riot Games has experienced two rounds of layoffs in recent weeks. In the first step, the League of Legends developer laid off around 80 employees who worked on the LoL fighting game 2XKO. That’s about half of the game’s staff. According to the game’s executive producer Tom Cannon, these layoffs were due to the game not achieving the right “momentum”. To put it bluntly, some players are very invested, but there are not enough players.
The second wave of layoffs occurred recently Confirmed to the game developer from a company spokesperson. This group is smaller but more widespread, affecting approximately 12 people across three publishing teams.
Since the total number of people laid off is around 100, these are not the worst numbers we have ever seen when it comes to layoffs. Cependant, it’s not great if these numbers make up half of a game’s development team.
As always, we wish those affected the best and hope Riot helps them through the transition.
