Overwatch Anniversary Splash Art

Overwatch utilizes events as a core aspect of the game’s live service approach, with many in-game events and even some in-person events along the way. Sin embargo, in recent months, a large portion of the Overwatch community and player base has become increasingly frustrated with how these events are being run.

En particular, there was a significant difference between the events available worldwide (for the majority of the player base) compared to the events only available in China. Often events were exclusive to that region and unavailable to the rest of the world, or there were drastic differences between China and the rest of the world in terms of content and rewards.

This is largely due to a partnership between Blizzard Entertainment and NetEase, with the latter managing the Chinese version of Overwatch. Debido a esto, China tends to receive region-exclusive rewards and events, making it impossible for players outside the region to get some of the most popular event hero skins and collectibles.

The problem with Overwatch’s 10th anniversary event

The most recent case of this is the Overwatch 10th anniversary event. For most players around the world, this event will feature a series of special anniversary loot boxes containing developer-designed sprays, weapon charms and profile customization cosmetics, as well as recolors of the default skins for each of the Overwatch heroes that were on the starting roster in split purple and white palettes. In the same palette there is also a Legendary Tracer skin reward with the bonus of a rainbow glowing RGB effect. That sounds pretty good, bien? Bien, until you compare these rewards to the Chinese 10th Anniversary event rewards.

Players in China will receive 10 Mythic skins, which are arguably both the most expensive and best skins in the game, thanks to unique voice sound effects, visual effects, and customization options that allow players to choose their own design aspects and color palette combinations. Overwatch was unavailable in China for two years while Blizzard and NetEase resolved a dispute. Tal como, this reward was chosen as both a celebration of the 10-year milestone and an opportunity for players to catch up on the Mythic skins they had missed over this two-year period. Además, the Chinese 10-year anniversary event features currencies and other legendary skins as rewards, making it significantly “better” in the eyes of global players.

The Overwatch community has not been shy about voicing these concerns and frustrations to Blizzard Entertainment. por decir lo menos, there’s really no comparison between two-tone skin recolors of the standard hero skins and Mythic skins. Por lo menos, I personally feel that the team could have at least added the soft RGB glow effect that Tracer’s skin has to all of the other skins to make these skins feel a little more special than the typical seasonal recolor. This would have made them even more unique and memorable in the name of the 10th anniversary event.

The feedback from the development team triggers mixed reactions in the community

While this has been a recurring issue, with previous events or even some crossover collaboration skins only being available in China, and fans around the world having been complaining on Overwatch’s social media and community forums for some time, the anniversary event in particular has sparked a particularly heated debate. So much so that Aaron Keller took to social media to let the player base know that they had been heard and that slight changes would be made to the 10th anniversary event.

“We also agree that overall rewards can be more than just loot boxes.” Keller confirmed this in his post, hinting that the team may want to move to a larger selection of exclusive event rewards later in the year. Personalmente, I would like to see a return of Overwatch 1’s event challenge skins, where players occasionally have a limited window of time to complete challenges and earn one-time exclusive skin designs. Previous examples of these challenges include the Deadlock Ashe skin, the Nano Cola D.Va, and the Roadhog Pachimari skin, to name a few.

Due to the exclusivity and nostalgia, these have been some of the most popular skins for these characters to date, but now it comes down to loot box luck to get them. Perhaps in the future we can see the return of challenge skins, giving players a two-week chance to get them for free through challenges. Afterwards, these new skins could also be added to the loot box pool for players who missed out. But this challenge opportunity is also an important part. For many players, this was a key factor that encouraged them to play consistentlyit gave them an exciting collectible to work towards.

While there are no major overhauls planned for the Overwatch 10th anniversary event, Aaron Keller has stated that there will be increased loot box rewards in weeks two and three. The number of Community Loot Boxes will double in Week 2 and then triple in Week 3. The team is also reducing the maximum number of games that must be won to receive all Loot Box rewards and adding a new Anniversary Loot Box in Week 3 that guarantees 4 Legendary Skins, resulting in a guaranteed 10 Legendary Skins through Loot Boxes during the event

Finalmente, Aaron Keller also stated that there will be one when season 3 starts a new, season-long event with an expanded base level of earnable rewardsas well as other ideas in the works for later in the year. Many community members responded positively to this statement and appreciated the fact that the developers seem to be listening to players and actively trying to make changes. Sin embargo, there was another part of the community that found it disappointing that they might not be able to add some Mythic Prismsenough to redeem just one Mythic skin, compared to the ten guaranteed Mythic skins in China.

After this significant event, it will certainly be interesting to see how the developers adapt to this situation and refine future events, as the community is certainly starting to get fed up. Honest? As a long-time player of the game, I understand the frustrations, especially related to skin discoloration. I actually rather like the recolorsbut not when they are released as new shop variants and restricted by microtransactions. En mi opinión, Overwatch Shop skins that can only be purchased with premium currency should be exclusive new designs. En mi opinión, recolors should only be included occasionally in the Battle Pass and instead be released as a purchase option with Overwatch Credits (the free-to-earn currency) in the Hero Gallery.

Finalmente, supervisión 1 used to have a large catalog of skins that could be acquired via this method, but this catalog saw little to no expansion during the Overwatch 2 – supervisión: Reign of Talon era. For many players like me, we already have almost all of these skins, which means we’re collecting credits but have nothing to spend them on. If the team ever brings back challenge skins, perhaps they could be purchased with credits instead if you miss them.

Event rewards are definitely a great area to make improvements for the future of Overwatch, but I’d like to see this extend to improving the rewards and hero skins systems in general as well. There are many options and avenues for the development team to explore, so I can confidently say that I and many other dedicated Overwatch fans will be eagerly awaiting the changes Aaron Keller mentioned. Overwatch has made great efforts to improve the game in many ways since the release and competition of Marvel Rivals, and this is simply another step that can be taken to help the game reach new heights.
