Did you come back after seeing all this? Großartig! By now, Du, like the rest of the community, should be just as excited about the potential for the first new game in the Guild Wars universe in about a decade and a half. Me too, and I’ll be there on day one to try it outwhen it’s ready, Natürlich.

Trotzdem, I can’t help but feel some unease about the announcement and what it means for Guild Wars and ArenaNet in general. I’ll address these thoughts later, but for now let’s focus on the good while asking the most important question: Why is ArenaNet developing Guild Wars 3? Jetzt?

Our time is now

Gildenkriege 2 launched in 2012 after more than a decade of, Also, massive growth in the world of massively multiplayer online gaming. After the release of World of Warcraft in 2004, many of the games that came to market were perceived (rightly or not) as “WoW clones.” The time was right for something different, and GW2 met those needs.

Jetzt, In 2026, the MMORPG industry is going through a rough patch, gelinde gesagt. There used to be a wealth of similar (albeit often solid) MMOs, but today there is a lack of high-quality games in this genre. It’s time once again for a new contender to emerge that can reshape the environment and recapture some of the magic we felt two decades ago.

Colin Johanson echoed that sentiment, saying during Tuesday’s livestream thatthe industry, the genre and ArenaNet are ready for this.He expressed the view that ArenaNet can once again innovate in the MMO genre by addressing the most common problems faced by players and strike gold again with a game that appeals to a wide audience, supported by the upcoming release of Guild Wars 3 on the PlayStation 5. Gildenkriege 3 is like a magician: not too late, not too early, but comes exactly when it is needed.

Persönlich, I rarely play MMORPGs these days, whereas in the late 2000s and early 2000s they were about all I did from morning to night. Heutzutage, when I see a new MMO announcement, I think about all the reasons why I have to do it nicht play it instead of any excitement I might have To play it. Ehrlich, I think the last time I was truly excited about an MMO was Guild Wars 2; Years of disappointment have taken their toll, but the announcement of Guild Wars 3 gives me some hope for the future.

From the perspective of the game Guild Wars 2, the time is ripe, and perhaps it has been for a few years. The story of this game revolves around the Dragon Cycle and the battle against the Elder Dragons of Tyria, which has been the focus of players for a decade. Jedoch, that ended in 2022 (with a short coda next year). Recent expansions seem to be evolving into a larger, overarching story, aber das “oomphfactor hasn’t quite been present since the fall of the last Elder Dragon. I like the idea of starting over with a new, long-term focus that a new game can provide.

And while Guild Wars 2 is still a very nice game, it’s also showing its age a bit in this regard, especially when compared to modern PC and console games. Graphics aren’t everything, but they’re not nothing either, and a brand new game gives ArenaNet a chance to apply a fresh coat of paint and update the look of the franchise for at least another decade or so.

Gildenkriege 3 GW3 Market

Never an asura thing

Every new MMORPG launch represents a huge risk to the company, and in recent years those risks haven’t paid off. Natürlich, ArenaNet is a company I can trust to deliver, but while the promise of Guild Wars 3 is enticing, I’d be lying if I didn’t have a few reservations.

I don’t want to speculate too much about the game itself, as we know next to nothing about it other than that it’s a prequel to previous Guild Wars titles. That in itself is a bit of a shame to me, because it means we won’t see the impact our actions in GW and GW2 might have had on the world, and it might limit the storytelling to fit thefuturenarrative. But it’s an artistic decision that ArenaNet certainly made for good reason.

My biggest concern is what this means for Guild Wars 2 and ArenaNet as a whole. The company is, Natürlich, saying all the right things about the future of GW2, but it will still be unpleasant for both players and developers. According to NCSoft’s most recent financials, GW2 is still doing quite well, but GW3 will reduce its income. Regardless of what players say now to convince themselves, many players won’t have the time (or money) to split between both games. I know my time commitment will undoubtedly take a hit.

The best comparison I can think of is Path of Exile 2 and how it influenced Path of Exile. According to Steam Charts, PoE averaged 29,886 players per month in the 18 months prior to PoE2’s launch. In the 18 months since then, the average has been 20,820. PoE is still fully supported, with regular content updates, keeping it about on par with what we might expect for GW2 in the future, but it’s still lost about a third of its player base. Jedoch, the numbers are still good and PoE2 more than made up the difference.

Closer to home, fellow NCSoft company Aion has seen a similar drop in salesabout a thirdsince the Korean release of Aion 2 last November. That brings us to another comparison: Aion has been doing well for a few years, but not spectacularly, which is probably one of the reasons NCSoft decided to make a sequel. Could it be that Guild Wars 2 did well in the same boat, but not well enough?

Active MMOs typically don’t get new parts unless the current game isn’t going wellwhy risk the expense and the possibility of failure when everything is going well? Consider the Destiny, PlanetSide and Final Fantasy franchises (Wo Das Games only get sequels when they’ve fallen off, as was the case with Destiny 2 (with Bungie essentiallyreplacingthat game with Marathon).

GW3 needs to come into its own (an apt metaphor considering NCSoft owns a baseball team) to justify the drop in sales for GW2 and the additional costs of developing an entirely new game. Based on our previous comparisons, PoE2 averaged more than three times as many players as the original game, while Aion 2 brought in more than ten times as much revenue as Aion while both games were active. Ähnlich, can GW3 outperform GW2? Based on GW2’s performance in its first year, it’s certainly possible, but the risk is always there.

The desire for a new MMORPG is enormous, the number of potential competitors is small. If a company with the right vision, talent, and resources were going to succeed, now would be the time, and ArenaNet is firing on all cylinders with Guild Wars 3. There are hurdles to overcome, but ArenaNet knows this is the best chance it will ever have to produce a sequel and take MMO gaming to the next levelwhatever that means in this era of the genre.
